Zubo

Review: Zubo (NDS)

EA has been trying an abundance of new things lately. It's obvious that they're trying to reel in a couple of different demographics, especially with the release of youth-targeted Zubo for the Nintendo DS. Contrary to what you might believe, Zubo is neither a puzzle game nor a product tie-in. What it delivers is a surprisingly well-crafted RPG experience that combines musical elements with an enjoyable (albeit rudimentary) battle system.

G1 Jockey 4 2008

Review: G1 Jockey 4 2008 (PS3)

Horse riding games are one of those specialist Japanese niches that rarely appear in the West. Only last year Gamestyle reviewed G1 Jockey Wii, which incorporated some motion control options as its main selling point, and now the PlayStation 3 receives its own horse riding simulation.

Review: Manhunt 2 (Wii)

Manhunt 2 feels like no care and attention went into it whatsoever.

Review: Gears Of War 2 (360)

Sera Chainsaw Massacre 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Review: Rock Band 2 (PS3)

This remains perhaps the most fun you'll have in front of your TV this year or next.

Review: Monopoly (Wii)

The good news is that this is far from a barebones package. There are goals to achieve.

Review: Professor Layton and the Curious Village (NDS)

If there's one major criticism of Layton, it's that the puzzle game and the adventure game don't really gel.

Review: Persona 3 FES (PS2)

Unquestionably if you did not get around to buying Persona 3 earlier this year then this is another opportunity and one not to be wasted.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

When worlds collide. This pairing was rumoured for many months, but nobody believed it, and why would you? The concept seems absurd and yet there exists a layer of intrigue. Ever since seeing the teaser trailer of Sub-Zero and Batman falling, punching each other in the face, Gamestyle became more interested than we thought possible. After all, Marvel vs. Capcom worked, so why cant Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe?

Valkyria Chronicles

Preview: Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)

Quantity, not quality is an apt summary of recent Sega output, with Yakuza 2 being the sole exception. The great Japanese studios are no longer the force they once were, sadly quiet or suffering from a loss of form. Yet in Valkyria Chronicles resides something to tempt PlayStation 3 gamers and disheartened Sega fans.

Preview: Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard (360)

Of course having a good, unique premise and a decent gameplay experience are two different things, but so far everything is looking quite promising indeed.

Preview: Motorstorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)

Once again eye candy is very much to the forefront, featuring expansive areas and a pleasing amount of detail.

Preview: Resistance 2 (PS3)

Insomniac seem to be pushing themselves to the limit in only their second stab at the FPS genre.

Preview: Tomb Raider: Underworld (360)

Tomb Raider Underworld seems set to benefit from the major improvements that Crystal Dynamics have implemented.

Preview: BioShock (PS3)

This modest port looks set to disappoint fans of the original who were hoping for a clearer vision of Rapture, complete with new experiences and the opportunity to explore its depths further.

Silver Screen: Dead Space: Downfall

Silver Screen: Dead Space: Downfall

EA have big plans for their new third person horror experience. Joining it are the comic books and an animated feature, both set before the game, and giving you more back story on the horrors within the USG Ishimura. Animated films normally have a better success rate than their live action counterparts (thanks to Street Fighter 2) and Dead Space: Downfall could be described as successful, but it all depends on how you look at it.

Crimes Against Level Design

Crimes Against Level Design

It's happened to all of us. We can find ourselves completely engulfed into a games world only for one level to completely throw us out of the experience altogether. What makes a bad level can come down to a number of things. It can be the general layout, the repetitive nature of your tasks or a difficulty spike the size of Mt Everest.

Silver Screen: BloodRayne

With BloodRayne Uwe Boll has returned the favour with what can only be described as a very poor effort that somehow managed to spawn a sequel.

2007 Disappointments

Not the worst, but a bitter taste.
